For the first time, the Southern Michigan Timberwolves will play in a league other than the MidContinental Football League. Monroe County's minor league football team will play it's 19th season as a member of the Great Lakes Football League (GLFL).
Although the League is new to the T-Wolves, some of the opponents are not. In 2010, the Timberwolves played the Capital City Stealth, Detroit Diesels, and Michigan Vikings, all members of the GLFL. The Timberwolves went 2-1 against those teams, losing only to the Vikings. Another familiar team in the new league are the West Michigan Force, a team the T-Wolves battled when both were members of the MCFL. The Force were MCFL champions in 2006.
Also joining the Timberwolves in the GLFL are the Flint Fury, who have been MCFL rivals with the T-Wolves for the past seven seasons. Other teams in the League include the Northwest Ohio (Toledo) Knights and the Midwest (Cleveland) Rams. The final roster of teams has not yet been determined.
"This is a competitive league that will still allow us to play against quality football teams, with less travel," said General Manager Scott Beard. "We still hope to schedule some of our old MCFL rivals in non league games. Our schedule really won't change that much."
The GLFL plays a Summer schedule. The 10 game league schedule begins the first weekend in June. The T-Wolves likely will play 2 or 3 non league games in May. The Timberwolves went 10-4 in 2010.
The Timberwolves are currently adding players, coaches, and volunteers. Anyone interested should contact Head Coach Mike Piasecki at
